Here are the signs of a failing blower motor:
The most obvious sign that your HVAC blower motor is not working is that there will be no air from the vents, and the furnace is still running.
The circuit breaker will frequently trip. A seized-up blower motor will undoubtedly trigger a circuit breaker. (Check the circuit breaker first; a faulty capacitor can also trip it.)
The blower motor will make strange noises. Depending on the problem, blower motors can generate a variety of noises. When a blower is malfunctioning, it may generate noises like vibrations, grinding, and high-pitched noises.
A burning or hot odor may come from the air vents. A defective blower motor can sometimes overheat, giving off a “hot” odor through your air vents. Your blower motor can potentially start to burn in the worst-case conditions.
Blower motors degrade for several causes, including:
Restricted airflow, causing overheating
Dirty air filters
Motor winding damage
Faulty bearings
Internal motor parts that are rusted
Fan blade damage or scraping sides
One of the best ways to prevent damage to your blower motor is by replacing your dirty filters regularly. A clogged filter adds additional stress to your blower motor.
