How to Know if Your Air Conditioner Coil Needs Replacement
So you’ve just had an air conditioning repair service professional tell you that you need a new air conditioning coil – but you’re not quite sure that the problem truly is the air conditioning coil.
When someone tells you that you need to replace the coil there are ways to know that the coil is likely the problem. Here are a few ways to determine for yourself if your air conditioning tech is telling you the facts.
- First, is there oil residue in the condensate tray under the coil? Refrigerant carries a lubricant and that residue is visible most times below the leak. It looks like dark wet spots, like burnt cooking oil. Most of the time this will be visible but it may be impossible to see it. Ask your technician how they determined the leak was in the coil. They should be able to tell you where the leak is. Have the technician show that they have used a leak detector and that detector has indicated a leak or soap bubbles and ask to see the leak with the soap bubbles.
- Have you needed to add refrigerant every year for the last few years? The number one reason a coil usually needs replacing is because it has a leak which causes the refrigerant to leak out of your air conditioning system.
- If your system is old enough, you may consider our leak seal treatment as an alternative to a coil replacement.
